Happy? New Year

Yay, it’s a new year! I love New Years as much as anyone, usually. But not since moving to Seattle. Well, not since moving into the International (read: China) District. Around here, tis the season to blow a lot of shit up and bang on drums. And not in the fun way.

The Chinese have no sense of rhythm. At all. They bang on their very loud drums the same way a 3 year old might bang on a pot: As loud as they can with no set pattern. They’re just making noise. But that noise isn’t enough. They get boxes and boxes (I’ve seen them on a dolly) of firecrackers and set them off all at once. All. Fucking. Day.

Last year it was novel and cute for the first day (Look honey, culture!) but now it’s just annoying as hell. And it’s not going to stop for the next month. I’m just glad I’m not hung over and can turn RockBand up really loud to try to drown it out.

And I totally get the whole warding off evil spirits with loud noises thing, I really do. But must you do it in front of every store front? (of which, there are about 20 on our block alone.) One would think that the spirits aren’t deaf and can hear the noise you’re making next door. If I wasn’t bound by a lease, I sure as hell would pack my shit and leave. I’m sure the bad spirits are long gone.

Whatever, I’ll just invest in some ear plugs. Happy Freaking New Years.
